I began working for MSU-CIBER as a freshman at Michigan State University. Growing up in a small town with relatively little diversity, my global mindset and experiences were somewhat nonexistent before stepping foot onto MSU’s campus. However, as a member of the research team for Michigan Export Growth Program (MEGP) within MSU-CIBER, I quickly developed a passion for broadening my knowledge base with regards to international matters. Without my position at MEGP, my four-year experience at Michigan State would not have been as rewarding.
Over the past four years, I have worked on numerous research projects designed to assist small- and medium-sized businesses in Michigan in furthering their international business goals. Not only have I gained valuable knowledge about the business landscape and exporting processes regarding many foreign countries, but I have also sharpened my written and oral communication skills. Additionally, I have gained insight into the entrepreneurial mindset of small business owners throughout the state.
While I have thoroughly enjoyed working for MEGP as an undergraduate, this position has also been detrimental in contributing to my academic and career goals. For example, because this position helped foster my passion for international experiences, I was motivated to participate in four study abroad programs while at MSU. Additionally, my work experiences at MSU-CIBER were the primary reason I was able to obtain an internship with Altria Group Distribution Company during my junior year. Furthermore, the skillsets I developed through MEGP also contributed to my success throughout the internship, which in turn led to a full-time job offer. Finally, as someone with an entrepreneurial mindset, working with the small businesses served by MEGP allowed me to have firsthand experiences with individuals whom I aspire to be like.
In conclusion, my time spent with MSU-CIBER and the Michigan Export Growth Program has been rewarding both academically and professionally, as well as personally. I am honored to have had this amazing experience and thankful that I have broadened my global mindset as a result of it.
